National Primary Schools Ball Games and SNE Championship Gets Underway in Mubende

Thousands of primary school learners from across Uganda have gathered in Mubende District for the National Primary Schools Ball Games and Special Needs Education (SNE) Championship, which began on August 26 and is scheduled to run until September 4, 2026. According to Nile Post, the 10-day event combines mainstream school sports with SNE competitions and is the first time the championship has been hosted in Uganda’s Central Region.

The competition is expected to draw about 22,176 participants and has turned Mubende into a major venue for school sports activity. It brings together children from different parts of the country to compete in ball games, build friendships and identify talent, while also creating space for learners with special educational needs to take part in organized sport.

At the opening, Joshua Mwomeezi, the national coordinator for Special Needs Education, said the games had started well and praised the enthusiasm of the participants. He also welcomed government support, saying investment in SNE sports is helping to uncover talent and promote inclusion. Thomas Bwiire, a sports officer for Busia, similarly thanked the government and urged parents to provide children with disabilities the basic support they need to attend school and develop their abilities.

William Bwambale, president of the Uganda Primary Schools Sports Association, said the championship had officially opened and would continue through September 4. Beyond the immediate competition, the event reflects a broader effort in Uganda to expand school sports and integrate learners with disabilities into national sporting programs.
