National League suspends Ebbsfleet over unpaid debt

Ebbsfleet United’s start to the National League South season has been disrupted after the league suspended the club’s first three matches because of ongoing financial problems, BBC Sport reported. The affected fixtures are away to Slough Town on Saturday, Folkestone Invicta’s visit to the Kuflink Stadium on 15 August, and the trip to Chelmsford City on 17 August. The club is also under a transfer embargo.

According to the National League, Ebbsfleet have until 17:00 BST on 18 August to provide evidence that their obligations have been, and will be, met. The league said it has also informed the Independent Football Regulator. BBC Sport said the action follows a winding-up petition from HMRC over unpaid debts dating back to April.

Ebbsfleet said on their website that the tax debts should be cleared by the end of August once a takeover is completed. The club added that vetting and financial checks on the proposed new owners had already been approved by the league in May, but that recent concerns about financial viability and debt treatment had emerged after the reversal of a development project linked to the club.

For context, Ebbsfleet were relegated from the National League at the end of the 2024-25 season and narrowly missed last season’s National League South play-offs on goal difference. The case matters because it could affect both the club’s short-term fixture list and its longer-term ownership and financial stability.
