Nansana Security Warns Against Violence Ahead of LC1 Elections

Nile Post reported that security leaders in Nansana Municipality, Wakiso District, have cautioned candidates and voters against violence ahead of Tuesday’s Local Council I chairperson elections. The warning was delivered at a meeting held at Nabweru Division headquarters, where aspiring village chairpersons from across the municipality met officials to discuss how to keep the polls peaceful.

According to the report, Nansana Resident District Commissioner Charles Lwanga said security agencies would not accept disorder or attempts to disrupt voting. He urged candidates to control their supporters, especially young people who might be drawn into disturbances at polling stations. Lwanga also emphasized that declaring election winners is the responsibility of the Electoral Commission, not candidates, security personnel or other individuals.

Police officer Asimwe Mutera appealed to contestants to accept the results and avoid hostility toward successful opponents. Nabweru Division Mayor Robert Masereka similarly urged calm, saying community leadership should not become a source of division. One candidate, Sinani Kakembo of Katooke B village, called on security agencies to act impartially and protect all participants equally.

Nile Post said other candidates welcomed assurances that contestants would be protected from intimidation, while electoral officials reminded residents that anyone listed on a village voters’ register is eligible to vote. The warning matters because LC1 chairpersons are the closest elected leaders to many Ugandan communities, handling village-level leadership and local administration, making public confidence in peaceful and fair elections important.
