Nameere Warns Officials Over Poor Service Delivery, Blames Weak Supervision

Nile Post reports that State Minister for Local Government Justine Nameere has linked Uganda’s continuing service delivery problems to weak oversight of public servants and government projects. Speaking during a televised interview on NBS TV, Nameere said some officials only work effectively when they are closely supervised, and warned that those who fail to carry out their duties will be held to account.

According to the report, Nameere said the Ministry of Local Government is taking a more direct monitoring role to ensure public funds produce the intended results. She rejected claims that official inspection visits are mainly for publicity, saying supervision continues beyond media appearances. She also pointed to cases where contractors receive government money but do not complete assigned work, arguing that poor accountability has allowed misuse of public resources.

The minister said government would be stricter on delayed projects, especially roads and other infrastructure, and signalled that contractors should not expect repeated deadline extensions or extra payments where work has not been delivered as agreed. She also cautioned absentee public workers, including health staff, saying citizens should find government employees available at their duty stations.

Nile Post also reported that Nameere cited a recent case in Greater Masaka where faulty electricity transformers disrupted businesses for weeks before action followed pressure from her office. She said delays in essential services hurt ordinary Ugandans, particularly small business owners who rely on daily income. The remarks matter because local government performance, contractor accountability and public-sector absenteeism remain central concerns in efforts to improve basic services across the country.
