NAGRC overwhelmed by pressure to supply breeding stock to PDM farmers

The Observer reports that Uganda’s National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Data Bank (NAGRC&DB) is expanding its livestock breeding work as it prepares for the 2026/2027 financial year. The agency’s board and management held a strategic retreat in Entebbe on August 6 and 7 to review plans tied to the National Animal Breeding Strategy and Action Plan, which aims to improve productivity, commercialize breeding and protect indigenous animal genetics across dairy, beef, pigs, poultry and fish.

The article says NAGRC&DB is facing heavy demand to supply breeding stock to farmers linked to the Parish Development Model, while continuing subsidized distribution from model farms such as Kasolwe Stock Farm in Kamuli district. The farm produces improved breeds and feed, including the Kasolwe brown goat, which the article describes as drought-tolerant and fast-growing, and Kuroiler birds that lay more eggs than local chickens. NAGRC&DB leaders say the agency is also increasing community-based breeding programmes, training, and access to artificial insemination services.

According to the report, the agency has already distributed large numbers of improved chicks, bulls, pigs and goats in Busoga, and has inseminated more than 10,000 cattle there over the past two years. The Observer also notes that Parliament backed a Shs 56.96 billion investment in breeding infrastructure in March 2026. That funding, together with the agency’s breeding and training efforts, is presented as part of broader efforts to strengthen food security and rural livelihoods.
