Nabweru Village Chairperson Dumps Garbage at Division Offices Over Delayed Collection

Nile Post reported that Dorothy Nankya, the LC I chairperson of Nabweru South Cell I in Nabweru Division, moved heaps of uncollected garbage to the division headquarters in a protest over delayed waste removal. The waste was said to have accumulated after a recent nationwide sanitation exercise, with residents reportedly leaving it near Nankya’s home after the clean-up campaign.

According to the report, Nankya said she had made repeated appeals to division authorities and health officials to collect the rubbish but did not get a response. She then arranged for truckloads of garbage to be taken to the offices of the Town Clerk and Division Health Inspector, arguing that the officials responsible for sanitation should address the problem. Nile Post said some officials tried to stop the offloading, but Nankya insisted that the trucks proceed.

The incident took place in the presence of Nabweru Division Mayor Samuel Mugabi and other local leaders. Mugabi criticized the decision to dump garbage at government offices, while acknowledging that the division was still struggling to clear waste from affected areas. He asked residents to be patient as collection continued and said government needed more dependable systems to remove rubbish generated during organized clean-up exercises.

The episode highlights a recurring challenge for local authorities: public sanitation campaigns can mobilize communities to collect waste, but without timely transport and disposal, the collected garbage may shift the burden onto residents and local leaders.
