Nabbanja Warns Kyegegwa Residents Against Mob 'Justice' as Crime Investigations Continue

What the report says
Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has told residents of Kyegegwa District to avoid mob justice and instead work with security agencies as investigations continue into a series of recent crimes there, according to Nile Post. Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, she said taking the law into their own hands could interfere with inquiries and endanger innocent people.
Nabbanja said the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Uganda Police Force have stepped up operations in the district, including patrols, intelligence-led work and community sensitisation efforts. She said these measures are meant to encourage people to report suspects through official channels and to help calm tensions in affected areas.
She also urged local leaders, religious leaders and other community figures to promote restraint and support victims and witnesses in giving information to investigators. Several MPs from the region reportedly welcomed the government’s response but asked for a stronger security presence and quicker progress on the case. The Speaker directed the ministry to return to Parliament with a fuller update on the findings and on steps to prevent similar incidents. The broader significance, beyond this report, is that Ugandan authorities often frame mob justice as a public safety and rule-of-law issue when communities lose confidence in formal investigations.
