Mysterious white foam draws crowds on Nigerian highway

BBC Africa reports that Nigeria’s National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, Nesrea, has opened an urgent investigation after an unidentified white foamy material appeared along the Kaduna-Abuja Expressway, a major road connecting northern Nigeria with the federal capital. The substance, seen on and near the busy highway, has drawn crowds and raised concern about possible environmental or health risks.

According to the BBC, hundreds of motorists have stopped in recent days to take pictures, with images circulating on social media and speculation spreading about what the foam might be. One regular user of the route, Isah Aminu, said some drivers had initially described it as “clouds” that had fallen, while others compared its appearance to snow. He said he avoided touching it but saw others moving close to the scene.

Nesrea told the BBC that officials from its Kaduna State Field Office, led by State Co-ordinator Hena Dangari Emmanuel, visited the location and collected samples of the foam, nearby soil and water from a stream for laboratory testing. The agency has advised the public not to touch the material, the surrounding soil or the water until the analysis is complete, citing the need to avoid possible exposure to hazardous substances.

The BBC reported that preliminary information points to a spill after a lorry was involved in an accident, but officials have not yet determined what the vehicle was carrying. The findings will be important for deciding whether cleanup, public health measures or environmental remediation are needed on a route used heavily by commuters and freight traffic.
