Mysterious 'little red dots' at the beginning time may finally have an explanation, thanks to newfound 'little blue companions' - Live Science

Live Science reported that astronomers using James Webb Space Telescope data have proposed a new explanation for “little red dots,” compact and unusually bright objects seen in surveys of the early universe. The objects appear mainly from a period when the universe was less than one-tenth its present age, emerging roughly 600 million years after the Big Bang and fading from view about a billion years later.

The report is based on a paper in The Astrophysical Journal Letters led by Josephine Baggen of Yale University. Researchers examined 83 little red dots from JWST ultradeep surveys and found that 36 had at least one nearby source of bluish ultraviolet light, including more than 80% of the brightest examples. Live Science said the team interprets these “little blue companions” as possible star clusters or small early galaxies, with masses from hundreds of millions to billions of suns.

The proposed mechanism is that ultraviolet radiation from these companions could affect nearby gas clouds, preventing ordinary fragmentation into many stars and instead helping form extremely dense objects. Under this scenario, some clouds could become supermassive stars that collapse directly into black holes without a typical supernova phase. The researchers suggest the red and ultraviolet light may come from different parts of the system, with intervening hydrogen-rich gas shaping the observed spectrum.

If supported by further observations, the idea could help address a major question in cosmology: how very massive black holes appeared so early in the universe. Live Science noted that the resulting black holes could serve as early “seeds” for later supermassive black holes, while mergers with companion galaxies might also contribute to the growth of large galaxies. The authors cautioned that the later evolution of little red dots remains debated.
