Muteesa I Royal University Unveils New Coach Ahead of EA Varsity League

Muteesa I Royal University has named former Uganda international Tonny Mawejje as head coach as it prepares for the East African University League. The university also introduced Peter Ssibbo as assistant coach, signaling a fresh technical setup for the football team ahead of the regional competition.

According to Nile Post, Mawejje was unveiled during preparations that included a friendly against Kasanje FC, which Muteesa I Royal University won 2-0. The match gave the new coach a first chance to observe the squad, while university officials said it also helped the technical team assess player strengths and areas needing improvement. Mawejje replaces George William Ssengabi, who had been involved in the team’s football programme.

University leaders said they expect Mawejje’s background to help raise the team’s competitiveness and build a stronger squad for regional play. Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Umar Kasule Mukuka and other officials attended the event, alongside players and sports staff. The university also emphasized its wider aim of combining academics with sport, noting that football is seen as a way to develop discipline, teamwork and leadership among students.

Captain Ali Lutwaama said the team must stay focused and disciplined as it prepares for stronger opposition in East Africa. The appointment matters because the league will test Muteesa I Royal University against universities from across the region, making coaching, squad selection and tactical preparation more important in the weeks ahead.
