Mutebi Takes Museveni’s cleaning campaign to Kyanamukaka

A National Cleaning Day exercise in Kyanamukaka, Masaka District, drew local leaders and residents as they joined the Personal Secretary to former Vice President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi, identified in the Watchdog Uganda report as Mr. Mutebi, to promote the government’s sanitation campaign. The event involved sweeping public spaces, removing waste and encouraging households to make hygiene part of everyday life.

According to Watchdog Uganda, the activity was carried out alongside Masaka District Resident District Commissioner Billy Mulidwa, Kyanamukaka Town Council Mayor Zainab Nakidde and other local leaders. The report says the cleaning policy was approved by Cabinet under President Yoweri Museveni and later launched by Vice President Jessica Alupo, with the last Saturday of every month set aside for public sanitation. Communities are expected to clean homes, markets, schools, health facilities and drainage channels.

Mutebi framed the exercise as a test of civic responsibility, saying sanitation should not depend only on government officials. He emphasized voluntary community participation and urged residents to continue the same effort beyond the launch day. Mulidwa and Nakidde, as quoted by the publisher, focused on household hygiene, including latrine cleanliness, safe drinking water and boiling water before drinking.

The report presents the Kyanamukaka event as part of a wider effort to make sanitation a regular habit rather than a one-day cleanup. It suggests local implementation will depend on whether households and businesses maintain cleaner surroundings after the monthly campaign ends.
