What the report says

Uganda will mark its 64th Independence Day with a much smaller ceremony than in previous years, according to Nile Post. The event is set for State House, Entebbe, where President Yoweri Museveni is expected to preside over a largely virtual commemoration on October 9. Minister for the Presidency Milly Babirye Babalanda said only about 30 VVIPs and a few religious leaders will attend in person, while most Ugandans are expected to follow the proceedings on television, radio and other national platforms.

The report says the day’s theme is “Embracing our Sovereignty with Hope and Visionary Leadership,” and that the format reflects broader government spending changes. Cabinet previously directed that celebrations for National and International Days be temporarily suspended from the 2026/27 financial year, with resources redirected to other priorities. Despite that, Babalanda said Independence Day will still be observed because it is a gazetted public holiday, and State House is funding this year’s event.

Museveni is also expected to present National Honours and Awards to 20 Ugandans, with names to be released before the ceremony. Security and logistics are being handled by several agencies, including the Special Forces Command, police and the military. The article adds that this year’s approach differs from Uganda’s traditional Independence Day celebrations, which have usually featured large crowds, parades and performances. It also notes that 2025’s 63rd anniversary was held at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in Kampala.
