Museveni tasks NRM MPs on fighting corruption, improving service delivery

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has called on NRM Members of Parliament to take a more active role in oversight of government programmes, with a focus on curbing corruption and improving public service delivery. According to The Observer, he made the remarks at the 3rd NRM Parliamentary Caucus of the 12th Parliament held at Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala.

Museveni told the legislators to remain attentive to the needs of ordinary Ugandans and to help protect initiatives meant to support socioeconomic transformation. He raised concerns about alleged corruption in public offices, including claims that District Service Commission officials sell jobs and that some officials handling the Parish Development Model demand money or kickbacks from beneficiaries. The President said the PDM was intended to help households move out of poverty, not become a source of enrichment for officials.

He also pressed MPs to monitor government health facilities more closely, especially staff attendance and the use of medicines. Museveni said absenteeism among some doctors has weakened service delivery in public hospitals and noted that government is considering tougher action against habitual absentees, alongside efforts to improve staffing through intern doctors and better remuneration. He further said medicines supplied to public facilities must be tracked to ensure they reach patients.

The remarks come as the government continues to face long-running concerns about corruption, absenteeism and accountability in public service delivery. Museveni linked the NRM’s political strength to its ability to respond to citizens’ needs and improve livelihoods.
