Museveni Relieved King Oyo Is Survived by an Heir

President Yoweri Museveni has publicly mourned the death of Tooro Kingdom’s King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, describing the monarch’s passing at age 34 as a major loss for both Tooro and Uganda. In remarks reported by Nile Post, Museveni extended condolences to the royal family and said Oyo had shown promise as a cultural leader who could work with central and local authorities on development in the kingdom.

Museveni also said government had helped support the king’s treatment abroad after being told the illness was a severe form of cancer. The president directed that Oyo receive an official burial and declared three days of national mourning, with flags to be flown at half-mast during that period. He said he was relieved to learn that the king had left behind a young heir to continue the royal line.

The Tooro Kingdom had earlier said a prince had survived the king, though the child’s identity is to be revealed later according to royal custom. Family members quoted in the report said Oyo had still been making plans for the future and had expected to return home. Beyond the immediate mourning, the death marks the end of a reign that began when Oyo became king as a child in 1995 and was formally crowned in 2010, after which he became a well-known traditional leader involved in youth advocacy and other public causes.
