Museveni rejected my resignation, UHRC’s Wangadya tells MPs

Uganda Human Rights Commission chairperson Mariam Fauzat Wangadya has told MPs that President Yoweri Museveni rejected her resignation, according to The Observer. She made the disclosure while appearing before the Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE), where lawmakers are questioning the commission over issues raised in the Auditor General’s report.

The committee hearing follows Wangadya’s earlier absence from an oversight session, for which she apologised. COSASE chairperson Muwada Nkunyingi had previously ordered her arrest after she failed to appear before the committee, The Observer reported. Wangadya has also recently criticised the commission’s leadership and said she intended to leave office, citing a difficult working environment and disagreements over the appointment and conduct of some commissioners.

Parliament’s scrutiny is focused on UHRC governance and financial management. The reported concerns include the lack of formal commission meetings since March 2026, stalled tribunal hearings, delays in handling complaints and the management of more than 200 files. The article says the tribunal’s work was disrupted after its hearing budget ran out, adding to pressure on the institution.

The dispute has widened into mutual accusations among commissioners and senior officials, with claims of financial misconduct and abuse of office also being raised.
