Museveni questions handling of Ggaba daycare murder appeal

What the report says
President Yoweri Museveni has raised concerns about how the appeal in the Ggaba daycare murder case is being handled, saying justice proceedings should remain visible to the community affected by the crime. According to Nile Post, he made the comments on October 2, 2026, while addressing the NRM Caucus at Kololo in Kampala.
The case involves Christopher Okello Onyum, who was convicted by the High Court and sentenced to death for the killing of four toddlers at the Ggaba Early Childhood Development Centre in Kampala. The children were identified in the report as Gideon Eteku, Keisha Agenorwoth Otim, Ignatius Sseruyange and Ryan Odeke. The trial was held in public at Ggaba Community Church under a mobile court arrangement, which allowed residents and victims’ families to follow the proceedings near the site of the killings.
Nile Post reports that Onyum has appealed his conviction and sentence at the Court of Appeal, arguing that the trial court did not properly assess the evidence and failed to accept his defence concerning his mental state. Museveni questioned why the case appeared to have faded from public view once the appeal was filed, and suggested that appellate proceedings, where possible, should also be accessible to the affected community.
The remarks have renewed attention on both the Ggaba case and the wider issue of public access to criminal justice proceedings in Uganda. As reported by Nile Post, the Court of Appeal is expected to determine the appeal under normal judicial procedure.
