Museveni orders official burial for Tooro King Oyo

President Yoweri Museveni has directed that the late Omukama of Tooro, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, receive an official burial after his death at the age of 34, according to Sqoop Uganda. The announcement followed Museveni’s condolence message to the Royal Family of Tooro and people across Uganda.

In the message, Museveni described the monarch’s death as a significant loss for both the kingdom and the country. He said Oyo had been orphaned early in life and died young, and he offered condolences on behalf of himself, First Lady Janet Museveni and other Ugandans. The President also said the king had shown promise in working with central and local government on development issues in Tooro.

Sqoop Uganda reported that Museveni said Queen Mother Best Kemigisa had earlier told him Oyo was battling an aggressive form of cancer. He added that government supported efforts to seek specialised treatment in Germany before the king was taken to the United States, where he later died. The President also said he had been told that Oyo left behind a young son, who would be introduced publicly at a later time.

As part of the mourning arrangements, Museveni ordered that national flags be flown at half mast for three days around the burial period. More broadly, the statement reflects the role of Uganda’s cultural institutions in national life and the government’s formal recognition of a prominent traditional leader’s passing.
