Museveni orders official burial for King Oyo

President Yoweri Museveni has ordered an official burial for the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the King of Tooro, and directed that Uganda’s national flags fly at half-mast for three days in his honour. The announcement was made in a condolence message posted on Museveni’s X account, according to The Independent Uganda, after the king’s death at the age of 34.

The publication reports that Museveni said he had been informed by the king’s mother, Her Royal Highness Best Kemigisa, that Oyo had been battling an aggressive form of cancer. It also said the government had supported the royal family to seek treatment first in Germany and later in the United States, where he died. Museveni said the late king left behind a young son, who would be presented publicly as heir at an appropriate time.

In his message, Museveni described Oyo as a significant loss for Tooro and Uganda, and praised him for working with central and local government on development matters. He also said the king avoided using cultural institutions to promote sectarian divisions. The President extended condolences on behalf of himself, First Lady Janet Museveni and the people of Uganda to the royal family and the wider Tooro community.
