Museveni Mourns Death of Tanzania President Samia’s Husband

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has sent condolences to Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan after the death of her husband, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, in Zanzibar, according to Nile Post. The message followed news that Ameir died on Monday, September 7, 2026, while receiving treatment for a heart condition at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital. He was buried later the same day in Kizimkazi in Zanzibar’s South Unguja Region, in line with Islamic funeral customs.

Nile Post reports that Tanzania’s Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi announced the death and described it as a sad moment for the family and the nation. In his condolence message, Museveni said he was deeply saddened by the news and extended sympathy on behalf of the people of Uganda, his family and himself. He also praised Samia’s commitment to Tanzania and the wider region, saying he had observed her dedication since her time as vice president.

Museveni’s remarks also highlighted cooperation between Uganda and Tanzania in areas such as trade, transport, energy and regional infrastructure projects, including the East African Crude Oil Pipeline and road and power links. The report adds that Ameir stayed largely out of public politics, despite Samia’s rise to the presidency, and that the couple had four children.
