Museveni grants official burial to veteran playwright Alex Mukulu

What the report says
President Yoweri Museveni has approved an official burial for Ugandan playwright, actor and director Alex Edward Kabangala Mukulu, according to The Independent Uganda’s report based on a URN dispatch. Mukulu, who died recently at age 72, is set to be laid to rest on August 20, 2026, in Kijabijjo, Gayaza. The Ministry for the Presidency said government officials and Mukulu’s family were coordinating the arrangements through the national organising committee.
Minister Milly Babalanda announced the decision and extended condolences to Mukulu’s relatives, colleagues and the wider creative sector. The burial is being treated as a state occasion, underscoring Mukulu’s standing in Uganda’s cultural life. The report says the planned farewell is expected to draw family members, artists, cultural leaders, government representatives and members of the public.
Mukulu was a major figure in Ugandan theatre for more than four decades, working across playwriting, acting, directing and music. The Independent said his work often blended satire, comedy and drama to reflect the country’s political and social realities. Among his best-known productions were 30 Years of Bananas, Wounds of Africa, The Guest of Honour, Muzukulu wa Kabangala and Journey to Self-Realisation.
His influence extended beyond the stage, with the report noting that he mentored younger artists and helped shape careers in the creative industry. The article also points to the wider significance of his work, including performances that reached international audiences and helped bring Ugandan theatre into prominent public view.
