Museveni Grants Alex Mukulu Official Burial

What the report says
President Yoweri Museveni has granted an official burial to veteran Ugandan theatre practitioner Alex Edward Kabangala Mukulu, according to the Nile Post. Minister for the Presidency Milly Babalanda said on Tuesday that the government will organise the send-off with Mukulu’s family, with preparations already under way through the National Organising Committee. The burial is scheduled for August 20, 2026, in Kijabijjo, Gayaza.
Mukulu, who died aged 72, was a playwright, actor, director and musician whose career spanned more than four decades. Nile Post said tributes followed from leaders and people in Uganda’s creative sector after news of his death. His work is widely associated with using theatre to reflect the country’s political, social and cultural life.
The report highlighted several of Mukulu’s best-known productions, including 30 Years of Bananas, Wounds of Africa, The Guest of Honour, Muzukulu wa Kabangala and Journey to Self-Realisation. It said 30 Years of Bananas, first staged in 1992, became one of his signature works, while Journey to Self-Realisation was performed at the opening of the 2007 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Kampala.
More broadly, official burials in Uganda are usually reserved for figures considered to have made notable national contributions. In this case, the government’s decision underscores Mukulu’s standing in the country’s arts and cultural history, as family members, artists and officials prepare for the final send-off.
