Museveni Defends Barugahara, Nameere Field Inspections, Calls for Decisive Action Against Corruption

President Yoweri Museveni has publicly backed field inspection visits by government officials, including ministers Balaam Barugahara and Nameere, saying their direct contact with communities is important in the fight against corruption. In remarks reported by Watchdog Uganda, he argued that concerns these officials might “stumble” into problems during the tours were not well founded, given the volume of complaints reaching government.

According to the report, Museveni linked the need for such outreach to recurring allegations involving public services and administration. He referred to earlier citizen complaints during his campaign activities, including concerns about the Parish Development Model, reports from elders in Bunyoro about alleged sale of local government jobs, and claims involving ghost learners, teachers and health workers. He said public barazas and similar meetings help bypass what he described as protection networks that shield wrongdoing.

Museveni also urged the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to assign an officer who can quickly review evidence gathered from the field so suspected corruption cases can be pursued without delay. He said official cover-ups and silence from parts of the elite continue to weaken anti-corruption efforts, while praising some individuals for exposing alleged abuses.

The president’s comments come amid broader public pressure in Uganda for stronger accountability in service delivery and public employment. Watchdog Uganda reported that he framed the renewed inspections as a sign that citizens want leaders who listen directly and act on complaints, and called on officials and the public to report corruption whenever it is found.
