Museveni commissions Mbale zoo, unveils strategy to protect Elgon natural resources

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has unveiled a new Tourism Conservation Strategy for Uganda’s Elgon Sub-region and commissioned Mbale Zoo, as the government moves to link conservation with tourism-led income generation. The event took place on Sunday in Mbale City during national World Tourism Day 2026 celebrations at Mbale Secondary School Grounds, according to The Independent Uganda.

The strategy is aimed at protecting forests, wetlands, wildlife habitats and other ecosystems from encroachment and degradation. Museveni said environmental damage could weaken Uganda’s tourism sector because many attractions depend on natural landscapes and biodiversity. He also pointed to changing weather patterns in the region as a reason to strengthen conservation efforts and encouraged residents to pursue tourism and other non-farm income sources, especially where land for commercial agriculture is limited.

Mbale Zoo, established by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, was presented as both an education and conservation facility, as well as a new tourism attraction for the Elgon area. Museveni praised UWA for the project and said it could raise awareness about wildlife protection while supporting local visitors and businesses. Tourism Minister Col. (Rtd) Tom Butime said the government is increasingly using digital tools and artificial intelligence to market destinations and improve visitor services, while also noting constraints such as limited investment and visa-related challenges.

The broader gathering brought together officials, local leaders, cultural figures and development partners to discuss tourism growth, investment and innovation in the region.
