Musasizi demands jobs, production from Uganda’s investments

Finance Minister Henry Musasizi has pressed the Uganda Investment Authority to focus less on the number of licences issued and more on whether incoming investments are delivering visible economic benefits for Ugandans. According to Nile Post, he made the remarks during an entry meeting with the UIA board, led by chairperson Robert Kyamanywa, and linked the agency’s work to the government’s broader Ten-Fold Growth Strategy.

Musasizi said investments should be judged by their ability to create jobs, increase production, support manufacturing, add value to raw materials and expand exports. He also called on UIA to keep attracting both local and foreign investors while helping them establish and grow productive businesses. The minister’s message reflects the government’s push for industrialisation and greater export earnings through local processing and value addition.

UIA board chair Robert Kyamanywa said the authority is increasing domestic investment promotion through countrywide mobilisation and by profiling investment opportunities. He pointed to efforts in Greater Masaka and Gulu, and said licence processing times have already been cut from a 48-hour target to 24 hours, with further reductions being considered.

The meeting also highlighted obstacles that could slow investment, including land titling issues, weak roads, power tariffs, and gaps in water, wastewater and industrial park infrastructure. State minister for privatization and investment Amina Mukalazi urged stronger aftercare for investors and more effective one-stop investment centres, so businesses can overcome challenges and expand.
