Mulago Hospital Steps Up Cleaning Campaign Ahead of National Cleaning Day

What the report says
Mulago National Referral Hospital has stepped up its hygiene efforts with a general cleaning exercise carried out on Friday, October 30, ahead of Uganda’s National Cleaning Day scheduled for Saturday, October 31, 2026. The campaign took place across the hospital premises and involved staff working to improve sanitation, reduce the risk of infection and support a safer environment for patients, health workers and visitors.
The exercise was held under the theme, “A Clean Mulago is Our Civic Duty and Essential for Public Health,” underscoring the role cleanliness plays in infection prevention and patient safety in a major referral hospital. According to the report, the initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen infection prevention and control at the facility while aligning with the national push for cleaner public spaces.
Hospital Executive Director Dr Rosemary Kusaba Byanyima said a clean hospital environment helps protect everyone using the facility from infections. She urged staff to treat cleanliness as a daily duty rather than something done only during organized campaigns. She also encouraged the public to practice good hygiene and take shared responsibility for keeping surroundings clean. In broader public health terms, such campaigns are often used to reinforce routine sanitation habits and community participation, especially in health facilities where cleanliness has direct safety implications.
