Mukono LED Forum Pushes Production, Investment to Spur Growth

Mukono District Local Government has held a Local Economic Development (LED) meeting at district headquarters with heads of department, local stakeholders and officials from the Ministry of Local Government. According to Watchdog Uganda, the session was aimed at improving economic planning, attracting investment and strengthening the implementation of development programmes in the district.

The ministry was represented by Senior Development Officer Julius Muhairwe, who urged participants to focus on production and investment as pathways to long-term wealth creation and sustainable livelihoods. He said LED depends on cooperation between government, the private sector, communities and other partners to identify opportunities and remove barriers to growth. He also outlined the need for local economic and business assessments, investment mapping, and the development of viable projects, along with support for public-private partnerships and land identification for industrial and business parks.

Muhairwe linked LED to the Parish Development Model, saying effective local economic planning can support food security, jobs, wealth creation and better services at parish and ward level. He also called for regular attendance at LED meetings so institutions can coordinate their efforts and share information.

District Commercial Officer Beatrice Owembabazi welcomed the ministry’s support and said more involvement from development partners and funders would expand opportunities for business and the wider community. Representatives of manufacturers also said they would apply the knowledge gained and continue collaboration. The meeting highlighted Mukono’s push to turn planning discussions into practical economic actions that could improve livelihoods and local growth.
