What the report says

The Nile Post reports that Uganda’s Mufti, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, led a fundraising drive for a girls’ dormitory at Nyamitanga Secondary School in Mbarara City, where the student population has outgrown available accommodation. The effort collected more than Shs54.5 million in cash, alongside construction materials and pledges, toward a planned Shs700 million project.

According to the report, the event drew Muslim leaders, government officials, politicians, businesspeople, parents and other supporters. Mubaje framed the project as part of a wider responsibility to support girls’ education and welfare, and he encouraged charitable giving for initiatives that improve learning conditions and student safety. He also contributed Shs10 million on behalf of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council and Shs500,000 personally.

Nyamitanga Secondary School head teacher Haj Ismail Baguma Kyoma said the school, one of the older Muslim-founded secondary schools in the Ankole region, now has more than 1,000 students, including many girls, making a new dormitory a priority. The planned facility is intended to ease overcrowding and provide a more secure residential setting.

During his visit, Mubaje also inspected a commercial complex under development in Mbarara that includes Abubakar Mosque and Muslim District offices. District leaders said the project still needs more funding, while Mubaje urged them to avoid bank loans and instead rely on community fundraising and internal mobilization.
