MTN Injects Shs550 Million into 2026 Busoga Masaza Cup

Nile Post reported that Busoga Kingdom has launched the ninth edition of the MTN Busoga Masaza Cup, with MTN Uganda committing Shs550 million to support the 2026 tournament and related community activities. The launch took place at the kingdom headquarters in Jinja City and brought together kingdom officials, MTN representatives, sports administrators and cultural leaders.

According to the report, Busoga Kingdom Second Deputy Prime Minister Owek. Alhaj Osman Ahmed Noor said the competition will begin on August 15, 2026, when Busiki hosts Bugweri at Namutumba District Headquarters Grounds. The opening fixture is expected to be presided over by the Kyabazinga of Busoga, William Gabula Nadiope IV. The tournament theme focuses on men’s role in ending teenage pregnancy, aligning the football event with the Kyabazinga’s wider campaign on the issue.

Fourteen teams are listed for this year’s competition: Kigulu, Bulamogi, Bukono, Bugweri, Bukooli Namayingo, Budiope, Bunha, Bunhole Bunanhumba, Butembe, Bukooli Bugiri, Buzaya, Bugabula, Busiki and Luuka. Nile Post reported that the winners will receive Shs13 million, with Shs9 million for the runners-up, Shs6 million for third place and Shs4 million for fourth.

MTN Uganda Sponsorship Officer John Paul Okwir, accompanied by Regional Business Manager Moses Oburu, reaffirmed the company’s backing for the tournament and partnership with Obwakyabazinga bwa Busoga. MTN also plans match-day rewards for players, vendors and fans, including raffle draws and half-time quiz activities. Kingdom sports officials urged teams to maintain discipline, underscoring the cup’s role as both a sporting event and a community mobilisation platform.
