What the report says

MTN Uganda said in its latest Sustainability Report that it contributed Shs15.32 trillion to Uganda’s economy and paid Shs1.6 trillion in taxes between 2022 and 2024. The report was launched on Tuesday, according to Nile Post, and presents the telecom company as a major player in digital connectivity, financial inclusion, environmental sustainability and community development.

The company said its wider activities generated Shs34.9 trillion in shared value across economic, social and environmental areas. MTN Uganda Board Chairman Charles Mbire said the findings reflect stronger governance, transparency and long-term value creation for customers, shareholders and communities. The report is also described as MTN Uganda’s first to align with IFRS sustainability disclosure standards, and it was independently assured by EY.

Nile Post reported that MTN Uganda continued expanding its network and mobile services, reaching 24.2 million subscribers by the end of 2025, increasing 4G population coverage to 88.6 percent and deploying 27,037 kilometres of fibre optic infrastructure. Its fintech arm, Mobile Money Uganda Limited, handled transactions worth Shs195.5 trillion and supported 14.7 million active wallets during the reporting period.

The report also said MTN Uganda cut Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 45 percent from its 2021 baseline and aimed for net zero by 2040. Through the MTN Foundation, the company committed Shs5.1 billion to education, healthcare, digital inclusion and community projects, while Uganda Securities Exchange chief executive Paul Bwiso said clearer sustainability reporting can support investor confidence and capital market development.
