MTN, AfroMobile launch Entertainment TV to boost local content industry

What the report says
MTN Uganda has partnered with Afro Mobile to launch MTN TV by Afro Mobile, a digital entertainment platform intended to make local and international content easier to access while creating new ways for Ugandan creators to distribute and earn from their work. Nile Post reported that the service is being positioned as part of Uganda’s growing digital entertainment market and as a tool for expanding the local creative economy.
At the launch, MTN Uganda Chief Executive Officer Sylvia Mulinge said the platform was designed to meet rising demand for convenient digital entertainment, including sports, films and music. She also framed content as an important driver of digital growth and a way to connect audiences with creators through online discovery and engagement.
Afro Mobile General Manager Kevin Kaija said the collaboration could open wider digital markets to Ugandan creatives, while film producer Eleanor Nabwiso said it may help address long-running challenges around funding and distribution. The Uganda Communications Commission, through representative Fred Otunu, welcomed the expansion of digital content but urged providers to maintain service quality, consumer protection and regulatory compliance.
More broadly, the launch reflects a wider push across Africa to grow streaming and mobile entertainment services, especially in markets where internet access and smartphone use are increasing. For Uganda’s creative sector, the new platform could offer another route to audiences beyond the country’s borders if it gains traction.
