MPs Raise Alarm Over Killings in Kiruhura and Kazo

Two members of Uganda’s Parliament have raised concern over a series of killings in Kiruhura and Kazo districts, saying at least 15 people have died in recent weeks. The issue was presented during a plenary sitting on Tuesday, 29 September 2026, where the MPs described the attacks as brutal and asked government to respond urgently.

According to Watchdog Uganda, Gen. Genesio Tumuramye, who represents Kashongi County, told lawmakers that five people, including a child, had been killed in their homes in the Kitura area over the past month. He called on the Ministry of Internal Affairs and security agencies to investigate the deaths, explain why they were happening and consider support for affected families.

The outlet also reported that Dan Atwijukire, the MP for Kazo County, said the situation in his constituency was worse, with 10 killings recorded between 17 August and 27 September 2026. He said the victims were attacked in different ways, including with hammers, by slaughtering and strangulation, and said women and young children appeared to be among the targets. He added that some suspects had already been arrested, and in one case suspects allegedly confessed after a killing linked to money from a community group.

Second Deputy Prime Minister Crispus Kiyonga expressed condolences and said government would work with affected communities. He also urged residents to improve vigilance alongside police and, where needed, the army, saying security agencies alone may not be able to stop such crimes in every household.
