Mpigi Residents Accuse Garbage Truck Operators of Stealing Livestock

What the report says
Residents of Buyala and Nsujjumpolwe villages in Mpigi District have accused garbage truck operators of stealing livestock and are urging tighter security around a nearby waste disposal site, according to Nile Post. The complaints center on alleged losses of cattle, goats and pigs from communities that say livestock once provided a major source of household income.
The residents said their suspicions intensified after they intercepted a truck linked to Nabugabo Up Deal Joint Venture and found it carrying 10 slaughtered pigs they believed had been taken from the area and were headed to Kampala. They identified the arrested driver as Twaha Mawejje and said another man, known only as Isma, was also in the vehicle. Local leaders echoed concerns that animals have been disappearing since the dumping site became operational, while also saying they have struggled to access the facility to verify what is happening there.
Mpigi Deputy Resident District Commissioner Saad Mwanje Muteesasira confirmed Mawejje’s arrest and the recovery of the pigs, and said investigations were under way to identify any other suspects. Security agencies, together with police and an army detachment in the area, plan to step up operations around the site. Authorities have not yet confirmed who owned the recovered pigs or established whether the wider allegations against garbage truck operators are true.
