Mpigi Deputy RDC Warns Village Leaders Over Land Fraud

Mpigi Deputy Resident District Commissioner Yahaya Katunze Kavuma has warned newly elected village chairpersons in the district not to work with land brokers or other actors involved in fraudulent land deals. He delivered the message during a meeting in Kituntu Sub-county, where he was addressing leaders beginning a five-year term in office.

According to Nile Post, Katunze said village leaders have an important role in preventing land fraud because local transactions often pass through their offices. He argued that some land disputes in Mpigi are worsened by leaders, families and higher-level officials who allegedly help push through questionable sales or transfers. He also said these conflicts affect a wide range of residents, including widows, older people, young people and low-income families.

The Deputy RDC urged the chairpersons to serve with integrity, hold regular village meetings and listen to residents so disputes can be identified early. He cautioned them against using stamps or office authority for personal gain, and said security agencies would not tolerate local leaders who facilitate fraud. He also reminded them that voters can monitor their performance and, where allowed by law, remove them from office.

The report said the warning comes as district officials remain concerned about allegations that some newly elected leaders may have links to land brokers who supported their campaigns. More broadly, land disputes remain a persistent issue in many parts of Uganda, often tied to weak documentation, family disagreements and corruption at local level.
