MP writes to Nameere disapproving Kibuku ‘Shame the Corrupt’ operation arrests

Kabweri County Member of Parliament Patrick Godfrey Wakida has raised concerns over anti-corruption operations in Kibuku District, writing to State Minister for Local Government Justine Nameere about how the campaign is being carried out. According to Watchdog Uganda, the letter is dated August 16, 2026 and says the MP supports government efforts to curb corruption, waste and abuse of public resources, but objects to what he described as intimidation, public humiliation and disorder.

Wakida said he had received reports that health workers at several health centres were being harassed publicly and in some cases arrested in ways he считает damaging to morale and dignity. He also complained that parish chiefs and local council leaders were told to leave their offices without what he viewed as proper procedure, and that some teachers were arrested in front of learners and community members. The MP argued that such actions could discourage public servants and disrupt essential services in health, education and local government.

The lawmaker said anti-corruption work should follow established processes under the Constitution, the Local Government Act and public service rules. He suggested that cases be handled through bodies such as the Inspectorate of Government, police, the Chief Administrative Officer, district security officers and district service commissions, rather than through direct public action. Wakida asked Nameere to avoid steps he believes bypass statutory mandates and offered to meet with her and other stakeholders on a more orderly approach.

The issue matters because Kibuku’s local services depend on the staff being targeted, and the dispute reflects a wider tension in Uganda between aggressive anti-corruption enforcement and due process, accountability and staff morale.
