What the report says

Mozambique’s First Lady, Gueta Chapo, has expressed support for Botswana’s anti-gender-based violence efforts during a fundraising event at the newly established GBV One-Stop Service Centre in Gaborone. The event, reported by Botswana Daily News and distributed by AllAfrica, brought together Botswana’s First Lady, Kaone Boko, government officials and police leaders to highlight a regional approach to preventing and responding to GBV.

According to the report, Chapo donated US$3,000 to the Office of the First Lady of Botswana. Boko said the funds would support survivor care, early intervention, safe spaces and public education aimed at reaching young people and communities. She also framed the issue as one that crosses borders, calling for broader participation from the private sector and other stakeholders.

Chapo said cooperation between countries is important when addressing violence and pointed to Mozambique’s existing network of GBV one-stop centres as a sign of experience that could be shared. Botswana’s minister responsible for youth and gender affairs, Lesego Chombo, and police commissioner Dinah Marathe both welcomed the gesture, describing it as helpful for public safety and law-enforcement efforts.

The visit came as Chapo and President Daniel Chapo were in Botswana as guests of honour for the country’s 60th independence anniversary celebrations. The report places the donation in a wider regional context, underscoring efforts in southern Africa to coordinate responses to GBV.
