Mozambique: Military Personnel Encouraged to Take Action Following Terrorist Attack in Niassa Reserve

Mozambique’s authorities say they are reinforcing security in Niassa province after an armed attack in the Niassa Special Reserve forced workers from a Mozambique Wild Adventures tourist camp to flee. According to Agência de Informação de Moçambique, the incident occurred in the Marangira hunting concession, north of Marrupa district near the reserve’s southern boundary, and caused extensive damage to facilities used by the lodge.

The report said assailants burned the lodge structures, stole vehicles, and also set fire to a local health center and police station. Some people were reportedly taken hostage during the raid. Silva Livone, Niassa’s Secretary of State, urged the Defense and Security Forces to intensify operations to protect residents and called on the public to remain alert and report suspicious movement.

Livone visited the area to assess the damage and check on the condition of affected communities and essential services. The article said the attack is believed to have been carried out by Islamist militants active in parts of neighboring Cabo Delgado. It also noted that this was the second major terrorist attack reported in Niassa Province, following an earlier strike in June 2025 at the Kambako hunting ground. The development underscores the spillover risk from the wider insurgency in northern Mozambique and its impact on tourism, local services, and civilian safety.
