Mozambique: EDM to Make At Least 420,000 New Connections By the End of 2026

Mozambique’s state-owned power utility, EDM, says it plans to add at least 420,000 new electricity connections by the end of 2026, a move it says could reach about two million people nationwide. The target was presented in Maputo during ceremonies marking the company’s 49th anniversary, according to the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy and EDM officials.

António Manda, the permanent secretary at MIREME, said current electricity access stands at 22.7 million people, or 66.9% of the population, up from about 9.8 million in 2019. He linked the increase to the expansion of the national grid and broader government efforts under the country’s universal access plan.

The connections are part of the “Energy for All Programme,” launched in 2018 to help Mozambique reach universal electricity access by 2030. The programme combines grid expansion with mini-grids and solar systems, especially in rural and peri-urban areas. Officials also said all provincial capitals and district headquarters are now electrified, while work continues in administrative posts.

EDM chairman Joaquim Henrique Ou-chim said the company has created a rapid-response unit for natural disasters ahead of the rainy season, which runs from October to April. He also pointed to ongoing problems such as vandalism of infrastructure and electricity theft. In a broader sense, the effort reflects Mozambique’s continuing push to extend reliable power access in a country where service expansion remains a major development goal.
