Mozambique: About U.S.$970 Million Mobilized for Health Sector

Mozambique’s health authorities say they have mobilized about US$970 million for health sector programs, with vaccination and immunization among the areas expected to benefit. According to the report distributed by AllAfrica from Agencia de Informacao de Mocambique, the funding comes from the Global Fund and Gavi, the vaccine alliance.

The announcement was made in Maputo at the opening of an international workshop on programmatic auditing focused on oversight and evaluating results from public spending. Health Minister Ussene Isse said the ministry is one of the biggest recipients of support from the Global Fund and Gavi, and that financing should lead to visible improvements in people’s lives.

The article also said Mozambique’s Administrative Tribunal, which checks the legality of public expenditure, is strengthening its auditors’ skills to carry out programmatic audits in the health sector. Tribunal President Ana Maria Gemo said the approach is meant to assess not only whether money is spent properly, but also whether investments, activities and outcomes are linked for public benefit.

AFROSAI-E representative Edmond Shoko said the workshop is also a forum for learning and sharing experience among professionals from different African countries. In broader context, such audits are commonly used by public institutions to examine whether funding delivers intended results, especially in sectors such as health.
