Mozambique: 38 Dead Following 20 Road Accidents

Mozambican authorities in the central province of Manica say 38 people died in 20 road accidents over the past eight months, according to AllAfrica’s report based on Agência de Informação de Moçambique. The toll is lower than the same period a year earlier, when officials recorded 55 deaths in 35 crashes.

The report also says the same period brought 33 serious injuries and five accidents that caused major material damage. Police commander João Mupuela gave the figures at the launch of the 34th Traffic Campaign in Manica, which was held under the slogan, "On the Road, Every Safe Journey Is a Happy Family."

Mupuela pointed to several pressures on road safety in the province, including a fast-growing vehicle fleet and the spread of informal motor-taxi services. He also noted that Manica sits on two major transport corridors linking Mozambique with neighboring landlocked countries, adding to traffic risks and enforcement challenges.

The campaign is being used as a forum for police, other institutions and civil society to discuss prevention measures and identify weaknesses in road safety efforts. More broadly, the article says road crashes remain a major cause of death in Mozambique and a heavy burden on the health and social protection systems.
