Mozambique: 1.4 Tons of Fentanyl Seized At Maputo International Airport

Mozambique’s National Criminal Investigation Service, or SERNIC, said it seized 1.4 tons of fentanyl at the cargo terminal of Maputo International Airport. The agency also reported the arrest of a 31-year-old Mozambican man who was allegedly involved in handling the shipment and was detained while preparing to collect it.

According to the report, police acted after receiving intelligence about a suspicious cargo consignment. The shipment was traced from Campinas in Brazil’s São Paulo state, routed through Luanda in Angola, and destined for Maputo. Authorities said it was expected to arrive in three batches on August 1, 6 and 11, 2026. Forensic testing later confirmed the substance as fentanyl, a highly dangerous synthetic opioid.

SERNIC said the drug was hidden in 207 boxes of cosmetic bottles and entered the country in liquid form, unlike an earlier fentanyl seizure at the same airport in June 2026 that involved tablets. Customs officials helped formalize the seizure by providing import documents and handing the goods over to investigators.

The case underscores Mozambique’s continuing concerns about transnational drug trafficking through major transport routes. More broadly, fentanyl is recognized internationally as a powerful and often lethal opioid, so large seizures are treated as a significant public health and security issue.
