What the report says

Prof. Pius Coxwell Achanga, the Vice Chancellor of Mountains of the Moon University, has been elected to the Executive Committee of the Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA). According to Nile Post, he will represent Uganda’s public universities on the regional body, which coordinates cooperation, quality assurance and academic integration among universities in the East African Community.

The election gives Uganda’s public universities a voice in a committee that helps guide higher education policy across the region. Prof. Achanga said he was honoured by the appointment and thanked colleagues for their trust, adding that he hopes to support regional collaboration and promote stronger higher education standards. The report places the development within broader efforts by IUCEA to harmonise academic systems and encourage mobility and cooperation between institutions.

Nile Post also notes that Prof. Achanga has led Mountains of the Moon University since October 2022. Before that, he chaired the government task force that oversaw the institution’s move from a privately chartered university to a public one, a transition formalised in January 2022 through an agreement between the Government of Uganda and the university’s board. Since becoming vice chancellor, he has overseen a stronger emphasis on programmes such as agriculture, tourism, environment, science, innovation and technology, alongside competency-based education.
