Motorcycles blamed for 60% of road crashes in Kigezi

Kabale, Uganda-based reporting from The Independent Uganda says Kigezi region recorded 5,298 road traffic accident cases in the 2025/2026 financial year, with adult males identified as the most affected group. The figures were presented by Henry Kunya, an epidemiologist at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital, during the fourth Kigezi Health Sector Joint Performance Review Mission at Volcano Hotel in Rubanda District.

Kunya said people aged 20 and above made up the largest share of victims, followed by teenagers aged 10 to 19. He also said accident cases were highest in Kabale District, while Kisoro recorded the lowest numbers among the districts mentioned. The report grouped the district totals as ranges rather than exact single figures.

According to the presentation, motorcycles were the leading contributor to crashes in the region, responsible for 60% of cases. Motor vehicles accounted for 20%, and bicycles 10%. Kunya linked the high risk among adult males to behaviours such as speeding, riding without helmets or other protective gear, and driving or riding after alcohol or drug use.

The figures highlight a continuing road safety problem in southwestern Uganda and suggest a need for stronger prevention efforts. Kunya called for more road safety sensitisation and broader action aimed at reducing risky behaviour on the roads, according to The Independent Uganda.
