What the report says

The Dallas Morning News reported that most of Texas’ confirmed cyclosporiasis cases this year are concentrated in two public health regions, based on state data obtained through a records request. The Texas Department of State Health Services gave the newspaper regional figures, rather than county-level counts, citing confidentiality rules. From early May through July 20, Texas had 106 lab-confirmed cases of the intestinal illness, which is linked to the Cyclospora parasite and can cause diarrhea.

According to the state breakdown cited by the newspaper, Region 11 accounted for 48 cases, or about 45% of the statewide total. That region includes Laredo, Corpus Christi and the southern tip of Texas. Region 6/5S, which includes Harris County and Houston, had 29 cases. Together, the two regions represented roughly 73% of confirmed cases reported in the state data. Region 2/3, covering Dallas-Fort Worth and extending west beyond Abilene, had six cases in the state figures.

A spokesperson for the state health department told The Dallas Morning News that no source had been identified for the Texas cases. Cameron County officials also said no source had been found for local cases, with three domestically acquired cases confirmed there. The newspaper noted that Texas has not seen numbers as high as some other states, including Michigan, and that the state’s overall count is similar to recent years.

The report also pointed to possible differences between state and local totals. Dallas County’s health director previously said the county had 18 confirmed cases, while Harris County Public Health reported 47 confirmed and probable cases in its jurisdiction. Local officials cited separate databases and reporting delays as possible reasons for discrepancies.
