Most Americans say US-Israel war on Iran not worth fighting: Poll

What the report says
A new nationwide AP-NORC poll, reported by Al Jazeera and published on 1 October 2026, finds broad public disapproval of the US-Israel war on Iran and of President Donald Trump’s handling of the crisis. About 69 percent of US adults said the war is not worth fighting, up from July, while 71 percent said they disapprove of Trump’s approach to Iran.
The survey of more than 2,000 adults also points to wider unease over the economy. Only 17 percent approved of Trump’s handling of the cost of living, and 26 percent approved of his overall economic management, which the article says is a new low. Concerns about fuel and food prices were also elevated, with roughly half of respondents saying they are highly worried about affording gas or groceries.
According to the report, the poll arrives as Trump begins a midterm campaign push in Texas and Oklahoma, trying to rally Republican support while voters worry about the economic effects of the conflict. Even so, the findings suggest some Republicans do not place all blame on Trump, with most saying higher prices stem from factors beyond his control.
The article adds that Trump has downplayed the polling, calling the numbers false and saying he believes the conflict will ultimately help politically because Iran would not obtain a nuclear weapon. The results matter because they suggest the war and its economic fallout could shape public attitudes heading into the next election cycle.
