Moses Matovu’s legacy outweighs Chameleone’s fame – Ruyonga

Rapper Ruyonga has sparked discussion in Uganda’s music scene by arguing that Afrigo Band’s Moses Matovu should be considered a greater musical figure than Jose Chameleone. In Sqoop Uganda’s report, Ruyonga did not dispute Chameleone’s popularity or status as a major star, but instead questioned how musical greatness should be measured.

His view places more weight on legacy, longevity and cultural impact than on hit-making or regional fame. Ruyonga said Afrigo’s songs are more than entertainment, describing them as lasting markers in Uganda’s musical history. He framed Matovu, as part of Afrigo Band’s long-running success, as representing an era when live performance and endurance were central to an artist’s reputation.

By contrast, Chameleone is presented as one of Uganda’s most recognizable modern artists, with strong influence across East Africa through his breakthrough career and Leone Island brand. Ruyonga’s challenge was not to diminish that success, but to ask whether popularity within the region is enough to settle debates about artistic greatness.

The debate highlights a broader generational divide in Ugandan music, where older bands and newer pop stars are often judged by different standards. Sqoop Uganda’s piece suggests the argument is ultimately about what artists leave behind once their peak fame has passed.
