The mortal remains of Tooro Kingdom’s King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV arrived at Entebbe International Airport on Friday morning, beginning the return-home and funeral arrangements for the former monarch. President Yoweri Museveni was at the airport to receive the casket, together with the Queen Mother and other government officials, according to Nile Post.

Police draped the casket in Uganda’s national colours and Tooro Kingdom colours before it passed through a guard of honour. Museveni later paid his respects and laid a wreath before the remains were transferred to a waiting helicopter. The helicopter was set to carry the casket, along with family members and officials, to Kyegegwa District for the next stage of the burial programme.

Nile Post reported that King Oyo died in the United States on August 27. He became king of Tooro in 1995 at the age of three, making him one of Uganda’s most well-known traditional leaders. The return of the remains comes as the kingdom and state prepare for the final funeral rites.
