Archaeological work at Oued Beht in north-west Morocco is adding new detail to the region’s deep history, according to an analysis published by The Conversation Africa and carried by AllAfrica. Researchers working at the hilltop site, which overlooks the river that shares its name, say excavations in 2023 uncovered what appears to be the earliest confirmed large-scale defensive construction in north Africa outside Egypt. The structure, dated through radiocarbon evidence to roughly 4,000 to 3,500 years ago, included a ditch, rampart and wall built across a narrow ridge.

The findings build on earlier discoveries at Oued Beht, where archaeologists had already identified a major prehistoric agricultural complex dating to around 5,400 to 4,900 years ago. The site also yielded evidence of farming, craft production and extensive human activity spread over at least ten hectares. The authors say the new wall suggests that communities in the second millennium BC were capable of organizing major construction projects and may have been responding to competition over land, resources or movement through the landscape.
