More than 2,000 flights canceled as severe storms hammer East Coast - Fox Business

Fox Business reported that severe thunderstorms across the East Coast caused major air travel disruption on Tuesday, with FlightAware data showing at least 7,000 U.S. flights affected. More than 2,000 flights within, into or out of the United States were canceled, and over 5,000 more were delayed as storms moved through the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.

The heaviest airport impacts were reported around New York City, Boston, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. According to the report, the Federal Aviation Administration issued ground stops at several airports, including LaGuardia, Newark Liberty, Teterboro, Westchester County, Philadelphia International, Boston Logan, Baltimore/Washington International, Ronald Reagan Washington National and Washington Dulles. Toronto Pearson in Canada also received a ground stop. John F. Kennedy International Airport was not under a ground stop as of Tuesday afternoon but was seeing average ground delays of about four hours.

Fox Business, citing Fox Weather, said the storms led to flood warnings and tornado watches in parts of the Northeast, with at least two tornadoes spotted: one in northeast Pennsylvania and another in northern New Jersey. In the New York City area, nearly 600 departing flights had been canceled and more than 500 delayed, and the number of disruptions was expected to increase as the weather continued.

Several airlines offered flexibility to affected travelers. JetBlue said customers whose flights were disrupted could rebook through Sunday or request refunds. United said eligible passengers could change trips without fees if rebooked within its stated window, while American Airlines said it would contact affected customers and required eligible rebooking by Wednesday for travel by Friday.
