What the report says

Fox News reported that the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a July 24 recall for more than 12,000 pounds of imported smoked bacon that entered the United States without the required import inspection. The products were made by Maple Leaf Foods Inc., identified in the report as based in Lisle, Illinois, and were sent to grocery distributors and retailers in Idaho, Oregon and Washington.

According to the USDA alert cited by Fox News, the recall covers not-ready-to-eat 12-ounce vacuum packages of “Royale Natural Applewood Smoked ALL NATURAL Uncured Bacon Product of Canada” and “TOP VALU Uncured Hardwood Smoked Bacon PRODUCT OF CANADA.” The affected packages carry sell-by dates ranging from Sept. 1, 2026, to Sept. 7, 2026, depending on the brand, and were produced on several dates in June 2026. The products also show Canadian establishment number “EST. 1,” with health certificate “2026-S732971612” on master case boxes.

FSIS classified the action as a Class I recall, its highest-risk category, which is used when there is a reasonable probability that consuming the product could cause serious health consequences or death. Fox News noted, however, that the classification reflects the risk from the missed inspection and that no illnesses had been confirmed in connection with the bacon.

Consumers who have the recalled bacon are advised to discard it or return it to the store where it was purchased. The USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline is available for food safety questions at 888-674-6854 or by email at MPHotline@usda.gov.
