More than 1.5 million dozen egg cartons recalled over possible salmonella contamination - Fox Business

Fox Business reported that Midwest Poultry Services has voluntarily recalled more than 1.5 million dozen shell eggs after routine environmental testing indicated possible salmonella contamination. Citing the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the report said the recall covers 1,589,577 dozen cartons of white shell eggs and brown cage-free shell eggs sold under brands including Kroger, Brookshire’s, Country Morning, Simple Truth and Sunups, along with some bulk Grade A and Grade AA eggs.

According to the FDA information cited by Fox Business, the eggs were produced at two farms in Texas and distributed to retail and food service customers in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico and Mississippi, as well as some smaller retail outlets. The products were packed and distributed from June 6 to July 3, with sell-by or best-by dates from July 20 through Aug. 17. Affected cartons carry plant code P-1950 or 840962 and Julian dates between 157 and 184.

Fox Business reported that no illnesses have been linked to the recalled eggs. Midwest Poultry Services told the outlet it began diverting eggs to a breaking plant for pasteurization after learning of a possible safety issue, and said it started an internal investigation and additional testing related to Salmonella Enteritidis.

Consumers are advised not to eat the recalled eggs and to return them to the place of purchase for a refund. The FDA notes that salmonella can cause severe illness, particularly in young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems, while healthy people may experience symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
